Mikaela is a soulful singer-songwriter, pianist, arranger, and teacher who hails from the ever gray Pacific Northwest. Just as she is comforted by the constant sound of rain, Mikaela soothes listeners with her clear, warm, resounding voice.
She was raised listening to strong women artists like Eva Cassidy, Paula Cole, and Aaliyah, and has always identified with gutsy R&B singers. A creative spirit, Mikaela penned short poems and stories throughout her youth. When she began songwriting, she dug into these influences and developed her own mature sound, mixing the rhythmic characteristics of Jason Mraz with the effortless pop vocals of Sara Bareilles, and provocative jazz sensibilities.
Fall With You, Mikaela’s newly released EP, features four original songs which form a meticulously crafted, but tiny, love story. It was recorded in Nashville where she has been privileged to work with the city’s top studio musicians at recording sessions every year since she was 15 with Disk Eyes Productions. Mikaela has sung on over 25 studio albums. Her contemporary rendition of ‘Autumn Leaves’ is featured on Voices of Love, a compilation of well-known female jazz singers.
This year has been a great one for songwriting awards! Mikaela was named a Regional Finalist in the Mountain Stage NewSong Contest, and was a Finalist in the Telluride Troubadour Competition (June 2013). She won 1st Place in the “Pop” category of the Indie International Songwriting Contest, was a Kerrville New Folk Finalist, and has placed in numerous other national songwriting competitions, including International Acoustic Music Awards, Wildflower! Performing Songwriter Contest, and the 29th Annual Mid-Atlantic Song Contest. She has won many vocal awards, most recently a Downbeat Award for Jazz. Well versed in all genres of music, from classical to country, pop to jazz, Mikaela is always seeking to broaden her musical spectrum.
She recently graduated from the acclaimed Jazz Studies program at the University of North Texas. At UNT, Mikaela sang in the school’s premier vocal jazz ensemble, most recently heard at the Kennedy Center opening for Manhattan Transfer. While playing at a piano bar last summer, Mikaela met and spontaneously dueted with R&B superstar Trey Songz — an experience she’ll never forget (over 150,000 hits on YouTube). She is also a member of pop artist Ben Folds’ Symphony Choir and has performed in Seattle’s legendary Black Nativity gospel show.
Mikaela draws in audiences with her commanding voice, engaging personality and creative song interpretations. You can find her around the Dallas/Fort Worth area performing piano pop originals with her band, jazz standards or classic rock with a cover band. Mikaela plans to continue making music for the rest of her life and will move anywhere she can pursue her passion for music, love, and happiness.
